Colour and psychology relates to how colour affects our moods and feelings.

Claude Monet

The fundamentals of colour

Colour dominates all aspects of our lives.

Sunlight is various rays of different colours that combine to create white light, the life-giving force on our planet.

The hundreds of shades and tints of colour influence our moods, attitudes, actions and the memories we create in every moment.

When we learn to work with colour and develop our awareness of how it may influence our lives, we can create change that can empower and heal us.

“Colour provokes a psychic vibration.

Colour hides a power still unknown but real, which acts on every part of the human body.”

~ Wassily Kandinsky

Colour and the Senses

“The eyes are our primary sense organ; it is primarily through the eyes that natural sunlight enters the body; although we take in light through our skin and through the air we breathe.”

~ Suzy Chiazzari

logic and creativity

'Left-brained' or 'Right-brained

You may have heard phrases about being 'left-brained' or 'right-brained'. Other associations made regarding the hemispheres of the brain are:

  • the right side of the brain - receptive/feminine energy and creative processing
  • the left side of the brain  - active/masculine energy and analytical thinking

Receiving light through our eyes

Light rays travel through the pupil and the fluid in front of the eye to reach the lens, which refracts the light rays so that they focus on the retina – a layer of cells at the back of the eye. Light rays stimulate cells which contain pigments that are sensitive to light.

These cells are known as rods and cones.

  • Rods are highly sensitive, they allow us to see dim light and enable us to distinguish between light and shade, day and night.
  • Cones are less numerous and are sensitive to the wavelengths of the three primary colours. These cones are situated directly in the middle of the retina, making green the most relaxing colour for the eye/mind.

The Visual Cortex

Light rays arriving at the retina cause the pigment in the sensory cells to break down.

This sets off a nerve impulse along the optic nerve to visual areas at the back of the brain (the visual cortex).

Nerve optics cross over in the optic chiasma. Impulses from the left eye travel to the right side of the brain and impulses from the right eye travel to the left side of the brain.

The information about the properties assigned to each colour and their potential to affect us on a physical, mental and emotional level are guidelines only. Colour is personal to each of us and finding your associations with colours is an interesting journey.

Colour and Psychology

The Hormonal System

Our feelings and emotions are directly affected by the balance or imbalance of the hormones in the body. By affecting the flow of hormones, colour affects our moods and feelings. By bringing a balance of colour energy flowing to the pituitary gland, metabolic and emotional equilibrium can be restored. This helps to alleviate stress, tension, anxiety and depression.

Using colour to alter emotional energy can result in changed perceptions of the world and how we experience it. We can utilise colour through healing modalities, colour therapy, creative projects, our attire and by including it in our environment to assist in altering our reality.

You can gain some self-awareness by observing your relationship with various colours. Your aversion to certain colours can reveal hidden weaknesses or areas of your self-image that need boosting.

Exploring your reaction to colours can help you determine both your strengths and your vulnerabilities.

Sensing Colour – The Skin

Light enters our body through the skin, for example, the warming and burning of infrared light from being in the sun too long.

Even through the colour of the clothes we wear.

We have a natural sensitivity to colour wavelengths. This sensitivity to colours through our skin is unconscious. But we can develop a sensitivity to colour energy through our touch.

It is interesting to observe that the colours we choose to wear can often relate to healing that we require on some unconscious level.

Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.

Wassily Kandinsky
