Paul Klee
Sue is an abstract artist who has had a deep love of art from a young age and has a background in painting, graphic art, and design from The Johannesburg School of Art.
Sue has developed an art style that showcases her passion for experimenting with new techniques and subjects.
Her exposure to abstract painting marked a turning point in her approach to art and led her to fully explore texture in her work. Sue develops her paintings in multiple layers, each one carrying its own story through texture and mood that build history into the work. Resulting in solid heavy areas of texture and fine marks that give depth to the completed painting.
Sue’s engagement with each creation is unique, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind original abstract artwork.
She draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including nature and personal experiences. Sue’s works to create pieces that are meaningful and invite exploration. Whether working in oil paint, acrylic, or mixed media, Sue brings her unique vision to each piece, resulting in works that are rich in depth and energy.
My artistic journey reflects my personal experiences and the profound impact of my surroundings. It encompasses diverse emotions and inspirations that have shaped my evolution as an abstract artist.
The saying goes, “The only constant in life is change”, and that has been true for my art. Although I have always explored deep meaning through visual representation, my subject matter, style and process have changed to become full abstract painting which reflects the changes in my perceptions and perspectives.
I believe that it is the emotional resonance of an abstract painting that speaks most profoundly to the viewer. My art is an invitation to connect with the complex layers of human emotion, to view the past as the foundation of where we are now and to contemplate the depths of our own experiences.
My recent abstract paintings explore the human condition and delve into the realms of memory and history. It's a deliberate attempt to peel back the layers, examine the past and unearth the foundational emotions that reside within the subconscious. This exploration is a deeply personal and introspective journey.
My painting style is a fusion of colour and intricate textures, involving the application of layers of paint that create a history on the canvas. The delicate "sgraffito" technique, marked by its subtle incisions and shapes etched into the surface, is a hallmark of my abstract painting technique. These details provide a tactile element and embed a sense of place within each painting.
Through the excavation of layers of paint, I seek to explore what lies beneath the surface.
I seek to create a visual language that resonates on an emotional level.
Each layer informs the next in an organic, evolving process.
The initial stages are marked by bold and energetic areas of colour, which gradually give way to a more refined composition. This layering technique contributes to the depth and complexity of the final piece.
My work is an intuitive process that unfolds in real-time as I paint, giving rise to unexpected and profound connections that shape the story within the artwork as it emerges.
I use oil paint when I need time to explore an idea and acrylic paint when the inspiration is pouring out of me too fast to wait for the paint to dry. Both mediums enable me to create multiple thick layers that can be carved back to excavate unexpected areas of interest.
When my art craves more than colour and texture, I introduce collage elements to deepen the narrative.
The Intricate sgraffito marks and shapes are a meditative dialogue between me and the painting.
These last-minute marks serve as a quiet, intimate exchange, and I never predetermine when the final line will be made, allowing the piece to find its natural conclusion.
It's these moments that I attempt to capture through colour and texture to create a story in my paintings. I am guided by the process of applying paint and allowing the story to develop into a painting. I use my brushes, all the tools in my studio and the marks I make on a canvas to put imagination on your wall for you to ponder and enjoy.
